| http://palazzo.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=364817 | Palazzo Statement on Passage of Budget Plan | 2013-12-18 | 2013 | 2013-12 | Republican | House | MS | Steven Palazzo | P000601 | palazzo.house.gov | legacy | Biloxi, MS- Congressman Steven Palazzo, (MS-4), released the following statement today after Senate passage of a budget plan that would protect the military from an additional $31 billion in sequestration cuts over the next two years: “I’ve fought against devastating defense cuts for more than two years because they threaten to put tens of thousands of soldiers out of work and make us weaker as a nation. My support for this imperfect budget plan is part of that fight to keep our nation secure. My support for Chairman Miller’s bills to protect military retiree pensions is part of my unwavering commitment to fellow veterans.” Senior Defense Department officials have said that sequestration cuts could force the Department to lay off hundreds of thousands of troops and jeopardize the military’s ability to carry out its missions. In July of this year, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel indicated that Army forces might be cut by as much as 155,000 and the Marine Corps could see reductions by as much as 44,000. At that time, he also indicated that without action, sequestration could cause Tricare fees to rise, housing allowances to be cut, pay raises to be scaled back, and commissary subsidies to be reduced. And in recent House Armed Services Committee hearings, Navy leadership testified that it would have to reduce its fleet by 30 ships. The budget plan would restore $31 billion in defense budgets over the next two years. Palazzo is also joining House Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Jeff Miller, (FL-1) in introducing two measures that would protect cost of living adjustments for military retirees. Palazzo is a Marine veteran of the Persian Gulf War and currently serves with the Mississippi National Guard. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
