Our governor, along with 29 other states governors, announced that they will not allow Syrian refugees to be resettled in their state. My bill will provide states clear federal authority to opt out of the Syrian refugee program. We have no fool-proof way of vetting these refugees and state officials should have the right to protect their citizens by refusing to participate in refugee programs. This is an insurance policy for the governors to use if the President continues to ignore the will of the American people. To date, 30 governors have expressed their opposition or refusal to house refugees in their states. Unfortunately, there is still a question of how much authority these state executives have to refuse the refugees. Congressman Palazzos legislation would clearly prohibit the resettlement of any refugee in a state where the Governor has taken formal action to disapprove of refugees or certain refugees during that year. ### Palazzo is a Marine veteran of the Persian Gulf War and currently serves as a noncommissioned officer in the Mississippi National Guard. He is the newest member of the House Appropriations Committee and serves as Co-Chairman of the House National Guard Caucus. He previously served on the House Armed Services and Homeland Security Committees. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
