Joe Pitts (PA-16), the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Health, which cracks down on anabolic steroids use. “Designer anabolic steroids are dangerous, plain and simple,” said Pallone. “They have been known to cause serious harm to consumers, especially young athletes who unwittingly use these products. As such, it is vital to ensure that they are classified as controlled substances so the DEA can quickly capture them before they reach the marketplace and potentially endanger consumers. My legislation does just that, and I am pleased that the President has signed it into law.” The “Designer Anabolic Steroid Control Act,” H.R. 4771, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives back in September and the U.S. Senate just last week, will close a loophole often exploited by steroid manufacturers to sell products that claim to be all-natural muscle builders when they, in fact, contain chemically altered versions of anabolic steroids. The bill will immediately place 27 new designer anabolic steroids on the DEA’s list of controlled substances as well as authorize the DEA to temporarily schedule new designer drugs on the controlled substances list, which will allow the DEA to identify and list new chemicals more easily.
