http://paulryan.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=355607 Paul Ryan Details Rejected House Offer 2013-10-14 2013 2013-10 Republican House WI Paul Ryan R000570 paulryan.house.gov     legacy In an interview with WTMJ's Charlie Sykes on Monday, Congressman Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) detailed the provisions of the House Republicans' offer, which the White House rejected over the weekend. Highlights "On Thursday, John Boehner, myself and other leaders of the House met with the President, in a lengthy meeting, where we put an offer on the table that said we’ll give you a six week debt limit extension to buy us time to enter budget negotiations to deal with entitlement reform, tax reform. You know, the things that are the drivers of the debt. To get ourselves out of debt, and get the economy growing. And then, we will immediately, starting that evening—Thursday night—negotiate with you throughout the weekend about the continuing resolution and Obamacare. Know that what we pushing for, our latest offer on Obamacare, were two really simple things, from my perspective. "Number one: Don’t give anybody special treatment-- like Members of Congress. You probably have heard Ron Johnson talk about this. Don’t give members of Congress a special advantage, and members of the Administration a special advantage, that nobody else in the country has. "Number two: you’ve already suspended the tax for businesses on the mandate. Suspend the same tax for individual mandate. Individuals can’t even sign up for Obamacare right now, so why would you tax somebody for not complying with a law they can’t comply with. "Seems to me those are really reasonable points. We said we would negotiate how to do that, over the weekend. The President said,' I'm not going to say yes, I'm not going to say no. Let's just think about this.'  "He spent the next day basically stalling us, only to call back John Boehner Friday night to say 'No deal, I won't do this. I won't sit down and talk to you guys.' "What we later learned, was that he was working with the Senate that whole day trying to get them to have an agreement to send a bill to basically jam the House."So it was clear to us, come Friday evening or Saturday morning, that the President stalled us. We were waiting, expecting to do negotiations, decided not to that and to try to work with the Senate to send something over to jam the House. And the Senate couldn't do that. Harry Reid walked away from the talks they had." http://www.rightwisconsin.com/perspectives/227665861.html 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
