Startup companies are a vital part of the economy. According to U.S. Census Bureau data, new firms less than a year old are responsible for nearly all net new job creation, creating an average of 3 million jobs per year. A separate study by the Economic Innovation Group found that each new startup creates an average of six new jobs per year. Unfortunately, current complexities in the tax code hamstring new companies, preventing many from even getting off the ground. For example, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) reports that tax compliance is 67 percent more costly for small businesses than for larger ones. Tax reform will not only help simplify the current code so small businesses and startups can more easily navigate their tax filings, but also close loopholes that benefit larger companies and special-interest groups.
