Ed Perlmutter (CO-07) joined 26 members of the U.S. House of Representatives to send a letter to President-elect Trump expressing concerns over reports the Trump transition team has asked for personal information of employees at Department of Energy National Laboratories (DOE labs). The 27 members represent and/or sit on committees with jurisdiction over the 17 DOE National Laboratories. “The 7th Congressional District is home to the National Renewable Energy Lab which is the world’s premier renewable energy and energy efficiency research lab and employs more than 1700 people,” said Perlmutter. “NREL and other DOE labs play a vital role in promoting technological innovation, research and development, energy independence and strengthening our national security.” As stated in the letter, the Trump transition team asked for “a list of the top 20 salaried employees of the labs, the labs’ peer-reviewed publications over the past three years, a list of their professional society memberships, affiliations and the websites they maintain or contribute to ‘during work hours’, according to The Washington Post. This was part of a larger set of questions asking DOE about which employees worked on the issue of climate change. “Staff at our DOE labs go where the science takes them, and for that they should be praised, not punished,” the letter states. The letter continues on to ask for specific questions that were asked of DOE about lab staff, the purpose behind them, and what the Trump transition team plans to do with any information obtained.
