Yet 49 million Americans, including 16 million children, do go hungry. Officially termed “food insecure,” they often don’t know where their next meal will come from. Today, Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) and Congressman Frank Wolf (VA-10) sent a letter to Governor Pat McCrory outlining several ideas on how to combat hunger at no cost to taxpayers. “Congressman Wolf has led efforts to fight hunger for several years, and I wanted leaders in North Carolina to benefit from his experience,” said Congressman Pittenger. “Community problems are best solved through community action, and this letter provides new ideas on how to involve more of the community in fighting hunger in North Carolina.” The joint letter describes several successful initiatives that Congressman Wolf has been involved with in Virginia, highlights an innovative partnership between school cafeterias and food banks in Kansas City, and discusses the need for more public-private partnerships to combat hunger. “There are so many ways we can combat the pervasive yet solvable hunger problem that exists all over the country,” wrote Congressman Wolf. In 2009, Congressman Wolf launched an annual federal employee food drive which has collected 15.2 million pounds of food donations to date. This fall, Congressman Pittenger partnered with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, the Billy Graham Library, WCNC-TV, and WSOC 103.7 FM for a food drive which he hopes will become an annual, community-wide event.
