In response to this epidemic, Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) today voted to approve more than $45 million in funding for military behavioral and psychological health programs. “Our brave men and women in uniform volunteer to risk their lives in defense of our freedom and way of life,” commented Congressman Pittenger. “Sadly, many return home with wounds we cannot see. In response to their sacrifice, we as a nation should be honored to provide them with adequate treatment for PTSD and other mental health challenges unique to the stresses of military life.” The National Defense Authorization Act also continues efforts to combat the scourge of military sexual assault by eliminating the “good soldier defense” and providing consultation for victims on options for prosecuting the attacker. The National Defense Authorization Act, which passed the House of Representatives today by a vote of 300-119, also: Rejects President Obama’s proposal for several years of increases to pharmaceutical co-pays for military families and veterans, replacing it with a one-year, $3 increase for select medications. Significantly reduces President Obama’s proposed cuts to the Basic Housing Allowance. Provides continued funding for airstrikes against ISIS. Supports the inherent right of religious liberty in the Armed Forces.
