Like many of you, I have been very disturbed by the shooting in San Bernadino, California this week, and the details we are learning about the attackers. It is clear we need to do a better job of screening who is coming into the country to prevent any future tragedies. That is why back in November, following the attack in Paris, I signed on to a letter sent to the administration asking that we halt the admissions process for any refugees from Syria and Iraq until we ensure that a thorough vetting process has been done to identify any individuals who pose a risk to the United States. I look forward to continuing to work to secure our borders and to improve our national security. Those impacted by these senseless tragedies continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. Washington Wrap-Up This week in Washington we tackled several big issues ranging from EPA overreach to improving our education system to funding for our roads and bridges. Some bills we considered which you may be interested in are: EPA Overreach This week we considered two different resolutions of disapproval regarding recent rules issued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These rules seek to set specific emission limits on new and existing power plants, which could have a damaging impact on the energy sector as well as the economy. Education We also considered the Every Student Succeeds Act which reauthorizes programs impacting our students in elementary and secondary education. If enacted, this legislation would be the first reauthorization of K-12 education since the signing of No Child Left Behind in 2002. It also would establish major reforms to our public education system by significantly reducing federal control, restoring local control, and empowering our parents. Transportation Finally, we considered a long-term reauthorization for our transportation infrastructure. While I was extremely pleased it was a five-year bill, I was also very disappointed it once again failed to provide a long-term solution for a funding mechanism for our roads and bridges. We cannot continue to pay for things through budget gimmicks and games. Next week we will again tackle some very important and timely issues. We will likely consider legislation to close any current security gaps in our Visa Waiver program, to repeal major parts of the Affordable Care Act, and to fund the government. Transportation Funding Bill: 'Garbage funding gimmicks in the highway bill equate to generational theft' In case you missed it, I wrote a piece in The Hill highlighting why I opposed the latest transportation funding bill the budget gimmicks, which inevitably places the burden for payment of todays roads and bridges on our children and grandchildren. This bill increases spending on highway and transit programs by using $70 billion of budget gimmicks over 10 years to pay for five years of spending. You cannot find $70 billion of cash in a fund that is $18 trillion in deficit. The math just doesnt add up. We need a long-term sustainable funding solution that is fully paid for, not Congressional accounting gimmicks. Read my piece here. Northeast Ohios Regional Hospital Association It was great to meet with Ohioans this week from northeast Ohios regional hospital association, which consists of nursing leaders from both practice and academia. This association brings together nursing leaders with clinical agencies, educators, and organizations to find solutions for healthcare workforce issues in our district. It is an honor to represent them in Washington, and I will continue my efforts in ensuring the best quality of care for all Ohioans. As always, read my Weekly Column here.
