My staff and I worked to make the most of our time and wrap up important business before the House adjourned. I look forward to returning in January, refreshed and ready to work with returning and new colleagues, as well as a new president. Media Mash Up I had the distinct pleasure of nominating 34 remarkable young men and women from our district to a U.S. service academy. Two of these nominees have already received appointments from the U.S. Naval Academy. You can read my press release announcing the nominees HERE. On December 7th, we remembered and honored those who lost their lives in the attack on Pearl Harbor and those who would survive and go on to fight for our freedom in WWII. You can watch my full statement on National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day HERE. I would like to congratulate Ohio State's Wooster Campus on its recent grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. You can read my weekly column in The Daily Record and learn more about the grant HERE. Today, Ohio mourns the passing of one of our own. You can read my full statement on the death of astronaut and U.S. Senator John Glenn on Thursday, December 8th HERE. Washington Wrap Up On Thursday, I voted for the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation (WIIN) Act. The WIIN Act will authorize the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to initiate several water-related infrastructure projects related to improving America’s port capacity, coastal and inland navigation systems, flood mitigation, and ecosystem restoration. For Ohio and Lake Erie this bill truly is a win. It will prevent the open lake dumping of dredged material from the Cleveland Harbor and Cuyahoga River into Lake Erie and will reauthorize the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). Established in 2010, this program is critical to protecting the biggest threats to the Great Lake Basin, the world’s largest freshwater system. The Ohio Chapter of Business Leaders United stopped by my office to discuss the importance of job training in Northeast Ohio and the needs of employers in the 21st century economy. My staff also met with various hospital and healthcare groups. They discussed the final passage of the 21st Century Cures Act, which passed the Senate this week and will be headed to the President’s desk for his signature. They discussed preparations for the upcoming Congress and incoming Administration and the reforms to be done to fix our broken healthcare system. District Doings My staff attended Canton SCORE Chapter's Client of the Year Award luncheon this afternoon. A new nonprofit, Warrior Beat, was presented a Client of the Year Award. Warrior Beat is a nonprofit that utilizes drums to benefit those with psychological issues. My staff also had the honor to recognize two Pearl Harbor survivors at the Wayne Center for the Arts Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day ceremony. Pearl Harbor survivor Bernard Comito of Dalton spoke of his experience, and Pearl Harbor survivor George Morton was also in attendance. We presented both with my Challenge Coin for their service during World War II. Finally, my staff toured the Haven of Rest Ministries in Akron. The Haven of Rest serves homeless men, women and families. They are more than a shelter. Women staying in the shelter can participate in Future Story. Future Story is a social enterprise job training program. The women learn business, gardening, and sewing skills.
