http://richmond.house.gov/press-release/rep-richmond-statement-historic-settlement-bp Rep. Richmond Statement on Historic Settlement with BP 2015-10-05 2015 2015-10 Democrat House LA Cedric Richmond R000588 richmond.house.gov     legacy Washington, DC- Today, Rep. Richmond issued the following statement after the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced the filing in federal court of the $18.7 billion settlement agreement with BP to resolve claims over the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill: Todays settlement will allow the long process of restoring the Gulf Coasts natural resources and economic vitality to continue, said Rep. Richmond. The residents of the Gulf States and the environment have struggled mightily in the aftermath of this disaster. This settlement, secured by DOJ, holds accountable those responsible for one of the worst man-made disasters in history. The resources secured in this settlement will go towards restoring water quality, revitalizing the surrounding area, and protecting one of the most important ecosystems in the country. In addition to rectifying the damage to our natural resources the settlement will also supplement the revitalization of local industry and spur economic activity. The coast in addition to being one of the most beautiful areas of our state is an economic engine that will finally begin to regain its liveliness. By putting in place new innovative safety measures, Im hopeful that this agreement will make future deepwater energy exploration safer and prevent a disaster of this kind from ever happening again. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
