Landrieu, D-La,  today announced $15.7 million in disaster recovery grants related to Hurricanes Katrina and Isaac for the New Orleans area. Funds are provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation programs. “The work we are doing to recover from these disasters ensures we are better prepared for and protected from tomorrow’s storms,” Sen. Landrieu said.  “Many of the facilities that will benefit from today’s grants will be reinforced to protect our communities and provide peace of mind for our residents and businesses.” “The $3.3 million in grant funding announced today represents hope and progress for the communities on the Gulf Coast that are still struggling to rebuild and recover after Hurricane Isaac,” Congressman Richmond said. “With each new grant, Louisianans get closer to our goal of economic growth and prosperity.  I am committed to working with FEMA to ensure our coastal communities achieve full recovery.” Today’s grants include: • $4.4 million to Facility Planning and Control to replace a building at Nunez Community College in St. Bernard Parish damaged as a result of Hurricane Katrina. The building hosts computer labs, administration and teaching offices, student government offices and commercial kitchen and dining. The new building will feature three air units on the rooftop to prevent flood damage. • $1.6 million to Facility Planning and Control for the Post Engineer Complex at the Jackson Barracks in St. Bernard Parish damaged as a result of Hurricane Katrina. The barracks are operated by a division of the National Guard, the Louisiana Military Department. • $3.3 million to St. John the Baptist Parish School Board to mitigate Lake Ponchartrain Elementary School from future flood damage after Hurricane Isaac. The project will construct a steel sheet pile floodwall around the building. The wall includes sewer backflow preventers and storm drain backflow preventers. • $5.4 million to the New Orleans Sewerage & Water Board to replace damaged water lines in the Lakeview neighborhood as a result of Hurricane Katrina. • $1 million to LSU Health Care, Services Division/Medical Center for Louisiana for leasing costs while its facility damaged by Hurricane Katrina is under construction. The Diabetes Clinic, Eye Clinic, Oncology Clinic, Tumor Registry and Medical Records departments have relocated to continue providing medical services to the community. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
