Standing with families from Chicago at a press conference marking the second anniversary of the Newtown, CT shootings, Kelly said that no matter where you live gun violence affects us all. “No community is immune to gun violence. Gun violence isn’t an urban issue, it’s an American public health epidemic,” Kelly said. “That’s why I linked my Chicago families of victims of gun violence with Newtown families to work together on gun reform. Ending this epidemic requires all of us coming together to stop the bloodshed.” Kelly added that while she is proud of the work of the Chicago and Newtown families in promoting gun reform, they need help from Congress. She urged her colleagues to address gun reform next year. “America can strike the right balance between protecting the Second Amendment and promoting public safety by keeping guns out of the wrong hands. And we must strike this balance. American lives hang in this balance,” Kelly said. “It’s time that Congress put saving American lives at the top of the national agenda by passing common sense gun legislation to make our country safer from gun violence.” Earlier this year, Kelly released the 2014 Kelly Report on Gun Violence in America, the first-ever Congressional analysis of the nation’s gun violence epidemic that offers a blueprint for ending the crisis.
