Rep. Roby was re-elected to a third term in the House of Representatives Tuesday in an election that also saw Republicans win a significant majority in the U.S. Senate. Utilizing that majority to move meaningful legislation will be key over the next two years, she said. “We have work to do getting this country back on track, and the time to start is now,” Rep. Roby said. “Over the past two years, my colleagues and I in the House of Representatives have worked to pass dozens of commonsense, bi-partisan bills, only to see them die in a gridlocked Senate. Now, we have an opportunity to send those bills to President Obama and put the onus for progress on him.” Among the House-passed proposals Rep. Roby would like to see revived and moved in the 114th Congress are: Responsible budgeting and spending policies based on conservative principles Health care law repeals and rewrites, including restoring the 40-hour work week by repealing the Obamacare employer mandate tax; The hire of veterans and improved programs to help those returning from war to find good-paying jobs; New education tax credits and the making the existing child tax credit more efficient and workable for families; Reforms to help welfare recipients find jobs and lift their families out of poverty; Improvements to America’s energy infrastructure to boost domestic production and create tens of thousands of jobs; And Rep. Roby’s own bill to give private sector employees the same “comp time” choices at work that government employees enjoy. "The time for politics is over. It’s time for responsible governing. Elected leaders must return to Washington ready to listen to the people, uphold the Constitution, and govern responsibly. I will strive to do just that in the new Congress." Another key responsibility for the new Congress will be repairing the damage to the military brought on by sequestration, Rep. Roby said. Restoring military funding specifically, and setting better spending priorities generally, must be done. “We have fought sequestration for two years, and were pleased to get incremental victories in a divided Congress. Now, we have an opportunity to repair some of the damage done by these ill-conceived military cuts and restore needed funding. Sequestration has hollowed out our forces and eroded military readiness to a point that is dangerous. “We took a small step in the right direction late last year by passing the Bipartisan Budget Act, which restored some military funding cut by sequestration and made modest reforms to mandatory spending. I hope we can use that step and the new Republican majority in the Senate to build momentum for more long-term reforms that help get our fiscal house in order and allow us to set better spending priorities.” | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
