http://ros-lehtinen.house.gov/press-release/bipartisan-task-force-anti-semitism-issues-statement-cancellation-monument-hungarian Bipartisan Task Force on Anti-Semitism Issues Statement on Cancellation of Monument to Hungarian Nazi Collaborator 2015-12-22 2015 2015-12 Republican House FL Ileana Ros-Lehtinen R000435 ros-lehtinen.house.gov     legacy Bipartisan Task Force on Anti-Semitism Issues Statement on Cancellation of Monument toHungarian Nazi Collaborator (Washington, DC)Today, the co-Chairs of the Bipartisan Task Force for Combatting Anti-Semitism released a statement after the announcement of the cancellation of construction of a statue in Szkesfehrvr, Hungary memorializing Blint Hman, a known anti-Semite and Nazi-collaborator. On December 4th, 2015, the co-Chairs sent a joint letter to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbn urging him to intercede and cease construction of the Hman statue. The Bipartisan Task Force for Combatting Anti-Semitism is co-chaired by U.S. Reps. Chris Smith (NJ-04), Nita Lowey (NY-17), Eliot Engel (NY-16), Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (FL-27), Kay Granger (TX-12), Steve Israel (NY-03), Peter Roskam (IL-06), and Ted Deutch (FL-21). We have learned through Hungarys Embassy in Washington that the civil-society organization responsible for the Hman statue has canceled the project. We applaud this decision and hope it serves as a reminder that the history of the Holocaust must be neither revised nor forgotten and the memory of the millions of victims must never be disrespected. We are also pleased by the advocacy of the U.S. government, as well as many U.S. civil-society organizations, in conveying Americas principled and unambiguous stand against anti-Semitism and objecting to the plans for constructing the statue. Background: Hungarys government provided the majority of funds for a local statue honoring Blint Hman, a wartime political leader whose actions led to the near destruction of Hungarys Jewish population during the Holocaust. On December 4, 2015, the Co-Chairs of the Bipartisan Task Force for Combatting Anti-Semitism sent a letter to Hungarys Prime Minister Viktor Orbn urging him to publicly condemn Hmans role in the persecution and deportation of innocent Hungarians and to withdraw government funding for the construction of the statue. The full text of the letter to Prime Minister Orbn can be foundhere. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
