Miami, Florida Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (FL-27), Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa, made the following statement regarding reports that more than 150 Cuban pro-democracy activists were arrested on December 10, Human Rights Day.Statement by Ros-Lehtinen: In Cuba under Castro, Human Rights Day is a reminder on the abusive tactics of the regime when Cuban state security arrested more than 150 pro-democracy leaders. The Obama administration held talks with the communist regime this week and the regime responded to Obamas misguided gestures by imprisoning Cubans on Human Rights Day. While the Obama administration lauds its own policies of unilateral concessions to the regime, those who espouse the ideals we hold so dear freedom and democracy are rounded up like criminals. A bevy of unilateral financial and political incentives has not caused these authoritarians to unclench their grip on power. Rather, Obamas concessions have only motivated the Castro brothers and their enablers to work to secure their despotic rule. ##### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
