Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, made the following statement regarding the joint French-Palestinian draft UN Security Council Resolution. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen: “By helping to draft this resolution for the Palestinians to introduce at the UN Security Council, France is now part of the problem and not the solution when it comes to achieving peace between Israelis and Palestinians. Being anti-Israel is now becoming the new anti-Semitism, and this latest effort by France and the Palestinians to delegitimize Israel comes on the heels of the French National Assembly vote to recognize the non-existent State of Palestine. “Anti-Semitism is on the rise in France and across Europe, with a record number of Jews having fled France for the one place they can truly feel safe – Israel. This resolution also comes on the heels of the European Union court making a grave mistake and removing Hamas from their terrorism list at a time when reports indicate that Hamas, which is designated in the U.S. as a terrorist organization, is currently reconstructing tunnels in preparation to launch more indiscriminate rockets against Israel. By introducing this resolution, France is adding fuel to the efforts to delegitimize Israel and is effectively undermining any prospects for peace and security in the region. “Introducing this resolution also reaffirms the epic failure of American leadership and diplomacy, as Secretary Kerry and the Obama administration have been unsuccessful in preventing the Palestinians from introducing this resolution at the UN Security Council. If the resolution comes up for a vote, the U.S. must veto this measure and it must make it painfully clear to Abu Mazen that there will be severe consequences if he continues to pursue his scheme to achieve unilateral recognition at the UN or join other UN bodies, like the International Criminal Court.
