Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, made the following statement after learning that S. 2142 – the Venezuela Defense of Human Rights and Civil Society Act of 2014 will come to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives this week. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen: “I’m pleased that the U.S. House of Representatives will bring to the floor this week the Senate legislation aimed at sanctioning the Maduro regime for its violations of human rights against the people of Venezuela. By passing this legislation, we send a unequivocal message that we will not allow the actions of the Maduro regime to go unpunished and reaffirms that Congress stands in solidarity with the Venezuelan people.” NOTE: Chairman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen is the author of H.R. 4587 – the Venezuelan Human Rights and Democracy Protection Act, which sanctions officials in the regime of Nicolas Maduro who are responsible for committing human rights violations. The bill passed the House of Representatives by unanimous consent on May 28, 2014. Senators Bob Menendez and Marco Rubio were the Senate authors of S. 2142, which passed on Monday, December 8.
