(Washington, DC) U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa, made the following statement regarding the passage of the Sovereign Security Act in Nicaragua. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen: Ortega could use this new security law to further repress the Nicaraguan people. Recently, the Ortega regime has used elements within the police and the military to brutally beat and harass pro-democracy leaders and I fear that this so-called Sovereign Security Act could be used to continue to clamp down on civil society and restrict the media as we approach next years presidential elections. As the Castro and Maduro dictatorships have done to those in Cuba and Venezuela, this law could be used to unjustly silence, arrest, and convict protestors and all those who speak out against the Nicaraguan regime. Ortega and his corrupt cronies have used fraud and fear tactics to manipulate elections, ignore the rule of law to run for an unconstitutional third term, and appear prepared to once again trample on the human rights of the Nicaraguan people in order to maintain power. The Obama administration must loudly and unequivocally condemn Ortega and his regimes latest tactics, stand up for human rights, and make clear that this and any further repression of the Nicaraguan people must have consequences. NOTE: Ros-Lehtinen is the lead Republican cosponsor of H.Res. 536, a resolution introduced by Rep. Albio Sires (D-NJ), the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, which condemns violations of press freedom and violence against those exercising free speech in Latin America. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
