Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, made the following statement regarding the passage of S. 2142 – the Venezuela Defense of Human Rights and Civil Society Act of 2014. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen: “I would like to applaud the Senate for passing commonsense legislation which will punish the Maduro regime and its cronies for the rampant human rights abuses they have committed in Venezuela. From the protests in the streets of Caracas to the farcical judicial proceedings against Leopoldo Lopez and Maria Corina Machado by Maduro’s own kangaroo courts, we have seen that the regime is only interested in self-preservation, trampling on democratic principles, and undermining the fundamental freedoms of the Venezuelan people. It is my hope that the House will take up and pass this legislation immediately so that with President Obama’s signature, Venezuela’s oppressors will be denied visas to enter the United States and their properties along with their assets will be frozen.” NOTE: Chairman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen is the author of H.R. 4587 – the Venezuelan Human Rights and Democracy Protection Act, which sanctions officials in the regime of Nicolas Maduro who are responsible for committing human rights violations. The bill passed the House of Representatives by unanimous consent on May 28, 2014. Senators Bob Menendez and Marco Rubio were the Senate authors of S. 2142, which passed today. To view Rep.
