Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (FL-27) made the following statement after voting for the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation (WIIN) Act. This bill includes the federal authorization to proceed with long-planned and awaited water conservation and ecosystem restoration projects, including the Central Everglades Project and the Picayune Strand Adjustment in South Florida. Both projects will help restore more, clean water in natural sheetflow to Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve and are expected to be a boon for native and endangered plants and wildlife. Additionally, by helping restore the Greater Everglades Ecosystem, the projects will also provide benefits to our community by enhancing groundwater sources for municipal wells and augmenting against saltwater intrusion along Miami-Dade’s coast.
