Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, made the following statement regarding the President’s signature into law of the Venezuela Defense of Human Rights and Civil Society Act. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen: “I’d like to thank my bipartisan congressional colleagues and the active Venezuelan community throughout the United States that helped this bill become law. I call on the President, the State Department and Treasury to vigorously enforce these sanctions immediately against those officials accused of violating human rights in Venezuela by denying visas of human rights violators, freezing their assets and blocking their property in the United States. This bill becoming law illustrates that the U.S. Congress will stand in solidarity with those who seek freedom, justice, and democracy even though the Obama administration wishes to canoodle with the oppressors who trample on human rights and basic fundamental freedoms.” NOTE: Chairman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen is the author of H.R. 4587 – the Venezuelan Human Rights and Democracy Protection. The bill passed the House of Representatives on May 28, 2014.
