Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (FL-27) strongly supports the decision by Florida Gov. Rick Scott and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to lift the Zika travel warning over South Beach, ending the last active local transmission zone for the mosquito-borne disease in Miami-Dade County. Additionally, the Congresswoman is pleased with CDC’s decision to announce $4.9 million in new Public Health Preparedness and Response Zika funding to the State of Florida on Monday, December 12th. This allotment for Florida represents approximately 20% of the nationwide total to be announced on Monday, a substantial increase since Rep. Ros-Lehtinen criticized the CDC’s previous funding formula in an August letter that was signed by every member of the Florida delegation to the U.S. House of Representatives. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen: “Today’s announcement that the Zika travel warning over South Beach has been lifted is welcome news for our community including for families, local businesses, and visitors. Despite some early stumbles, the work of emergency responders throughout all levels of government, in combination with the efforts of an informed public, successfully limited the spread and impact of this epidemic. There is much to celebrate in today’s announcement, but we must also stay vigilant and improve the tools available to combat Zika’s invasive mosquito host so that the virus does not begin to spread locally once again. I also want to thank Director Frieden and the CDC for the nearly $5 million in new funds they will make available to Florida for Zika preparedness and response. As the state most impacted and threatened by Zika, Florida deserves a greater share of the federal resources available.
