Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, made the following statement regarding today’s announcement that the U.S. and France have come to an agreement on compensation for victims of Holocaust-related deportation from France by the SNCF railway company. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen: “This agreement is a step in the right direction toward getting many Holocaust victims, and their families, the justice that has evaded them for nearly seventy years. The fact that the French government has acknowledged its culpability in humanity’s darkest period is a victory for those whose lives were torn asunder by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. This agreement serves as a grim reminder of the urgency with which we need to press to ensure that all Holocaust survivors receive their day of justice, including the recovery of billions of unpaid insurance policies and providing resources for all the needs of tens of thousands of survivors who are living in poverty across the world. I will continue to work in Congress with my colleagues in a bipartisan manner to ensure that the voices of all Holocaust survivors are heard and justice is served.” ##### NOTE: Ros-Lehtinen had joined Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) in introducing the Holocaust Rail Justice Act every Congress since 2009, which would have given survivors and their family members a forum to bring claims against the SNCF for its role in transporting tens of thousands of Jews and others to Nazi death camps.
