| http://sablan.house.gov/hopwood-honored-recognition-congress | Hopwood honored by recognition from Congress | 2013-11-07 | 2013 | 2013-11 | Independent | Senate | MP | Gregorio Sablan | S001177 | sablan.house.gov | legacy | Hopwood Junior High School principal Jonas Barcinas said it was a great honor for school to be recognized by no less than Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP) during the Public School System’s Education Day celebration on Saipan last month. “I want to thank the office of our U.S. congressman for their diligent support and constant communication in providing them with all the information in order to make the tribute to Hopwood become a reality,” Barcinas said. Sablan, in the presence of Gov. Eloy S. Inos, Lt. Gov. Jude U. Hofschneider, PSS Board of Education chair Herman Guerrero, and Education Commissioner Dr. Rita Inos, gave Hopwood and Barcinas a large plaque commemorating Hopwood’s 50th year anniversary in 2012. “We were very touched for such recognition… because we were recognized on this special day in front of all the PSS staff. Thank you, Kilili, for such a tribute and for all that you have done for Hopwood and the entire PSS family,” said Barcinas. Saipan Intermediate School, founded after World War II and the first school to offer secondary education in the Northern Mariana Islands, was renamed Hopwood Junior Senior High School in 1962. It was renamed in honor of Adm. Herbert Gladstone Hopwood, a Naval officer with 42 years of distinguished service to the U.S. armed forces, including three years as commander-in-chief of the Pacific Fleet. “From its humble beginnings in 1949 and to this day, Hopwood is recognized as an institution that has played a historic role in our community and continues to serve a vital role in the lives of our students and our community,” Sablan’s message in the commemorative plaque read. “I have great confidence that the school will continue to distinguish itself in the years to come. And I offer my congratulations to all those who have been affiliated with Hopwood Junior High School over these many years—teachers, staff, students, alumni, and parents,” he added. Barcinas said that Hopwood has gone through a lot of administrations each one made some great contribution to the success of this school. “I guess I was the lucky one of the principals because a great funding source was present to help us transform this ailing campus. The [American Recovery and Reinvestment Act] came just on the right time for us to help make the learning environment for our students much more conducive and safer for all. Now you can see the beautiful swan visible to the eyes for all our community.” | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
