The Rotarians guest speaker during their meeting at the Hyatts Giovannis, Sablan praised the clubs humanitarian work that included its relief efforts in the aftermath of Typhoon Jean on April 11, 1968. Until Soudelor made landfall on Saipan on Aug. 2, 2015, Jean was the last typhoon that slammed into the island. The Rotary Club has a long history of humanitarian service here, Sablan said. One of your very first projects, as some of you may remember, was coordinating relief for dozens of families who lost their homes to Typhoon Jean. He said it was in 1968 when the local chapter of the Rotary was organized. The compassion and generosity you have shown over almost half a century now lifting spirits, educating young minds, helping people up from poverty or after disasters here in the Marianas and throughout our region and the world that is a record every Rotarian should be so proud of, Sablan added. He said in the wake of Typhoon Soudelor, everyone saw the outpouring of volunteerism and community spirit. Sablan said the example shown by Rotary Club for close to 50 years on Saipan giving selflessly when help is needed may have shaped the thinking of those involved in the relief efforts today.
