He said there are still typhoon-damaged trees adjacent to the courts that have to be cut down as they are threats to the public. Kilili is responding to Rep. Antonio Sablans inquiries regarding the repair of the federal park facilities and its pathways that were damaged by Typhoon Soudelor in August. In his letter to Rep. Antonio Sablan, Kilili said the tennis courts have been cleared of fallen trees, but a few damaged trees adjacent to the courts may fall on the fence. He said the U.S. Park Service is purchasing a fence replacement that will be installed as soon as it can be shipped to the island. They are [also] cutting off and removing the many lights on the tennis courts that were damaged and are no longer safe. Replacement lights have been ordered and are expected to be installed by a local contractor soon after they arrive. There is some damage to the court surface. The courts are expected to be open for daylight play sometime in March, with nighttime play to resume after the lights are installed, Kilili said. As for access, he said nearly 90 percent of the trees in the park were either uprooted or were significantly damaged. While all of the sidewalks have been initially cleared for access, several leaning trees and threatening branches must be removed before the sidewalks can be safely opened for the public, Kilili said, adding that access to the sidewalks is only for day-use until lighting can be replaced. He said access to Smiling Cove and Outer Cove Marinas were opened two days after the typhoon. But the Outer Cove docks have significant safety issues, are not open to normal public use, and provide very limited berthing for owners, he added. He said public boarding of boats is safely occurring at Smiling Cove but only temporarily while the commonwealth is still working on a more permanent solution for the Outer Cove docks. The Visitor Center, Kilili said, is open to the public on regular hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. However, he said the auditorium is still closed due to water and mold damage, and one wall at the back will have to be replaced along with exhibits on that wall. The memorial portion of the park is open and being maintained regularly, Kilili said, but added that the park is open only during daylight hours as most of the safety and security lighting was damaged in the storm. The replacement of the American flagpole at the center of the Court of Honor is expected to arrive on island soon, Kilili said. American Memorial Park, he added, was able to use fiscal year 2015 operational funds to address its recovery needs. In an interview, Rep.
