President Obama vetoed the original bill last month because it increased defense spending above budget caps without any increase in domestic spending. The revised bill reduces defense spending, but retains the increased academy positions for NMI students. Once the revised bill is signed, we will have three positions at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the Naval Academy at Annapolis, and the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs 9 in all with 4 openings for the coming year. When I came to office in 2009 I quickly got the number of Northern Marianas slots doubled from 3 to 6 in Section 527 of Public Law 111-84. The Northern Marianas has produced good candidates, and those positions are almost full. So its time to add more.
