http://sablan.house.gov/press-release/army-corps-projects-could-cost-commonwealth-less Army Corps projects could cost the Commonwealth less 2013-10-28 2013 2013-10 Independent Senate MP Gregorio Sablan S001177 sablan.house.gov     legacy Army Corps projects could cost the Commonwealth less Oct 28, 2013 The Water Resources Reform and Development Act — with my provision doubling the waiver of local match requirements for Army Corps projects in the Northern Marianas and other territories — passed the House on a 417-3 vote.  The Senate has also passed a reauthorization, so House and Senate bills now go to a conference committee for reconciliation.  Only the House bill contains the waiver provision, which will adjust the $200,000 waiver put in place in 1986 to an amount that reflects inflation since then.  The new waiver should be in excess of $400,000.  More work remains to keep this provision in the bill that comes out of conference, but doubling the waiver amount will make it less expensive for the Commonwealth to match federal dollars for Army Corps undertakings and in some cases mean not paying any local match at all.  Typical Corps projects include the Rota Harbor improvements completed in 2008, the on-going Susupe-Chalan Kanoa Drainage Plan to address flooding in those villages, or the planned Outer Cove Marina project and the Saipan Lagoon Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
