http://sablan.house.gov/press-release/changes-veterans-benefits-could-affect-nmi	Changes to veterans benefits could affect NMI	2014-11-14	2014	2014-11	Independent	Senate	MP	Gregorio Sablan	S001177	sablan.house.gov			legacy	Changes to veterans benefits could affect NMI Nov 14, 2014 Veterans and families of veterans should be aware of two changes to GI Bill education benefits that are now going into effect: Section 701 of the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act passed by Congress earlier this year expands the Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship to include the surviving spouses of Servicemembers who died in the line of duty after September 10, 2001. Prior to this law, only children of those who died in the line of duty were eligible for this benefit. Eligible spouses will be entitled to up to 36 months of the full, 100% level of the Post-9/11 GI Bill, which includes the tuition and fee payment, a monthly housing allowance, and a books and supplies stipend. Section 702 of the new law requires the Veterans Administration to disapprove programs of education under the Post-9/11 GI Bill and Montgomery GI Bill – Active Duty at public institutions of higher learning if the school charges qualifying Veterans and dependents tuition and fees in excess of the rate for resident students for terms beginning after July 1, 2015. This provision should have the effect of forcing public colleges and universities to offer resident tuition to anyone covered by the GI bills.
