The Commonwealth Utilities Corporation charges over 40 cents per kilowatt hour – three and a half times the U.S. average – because CUC is completely dependent on expensive diesel fuel. The Interior Department’s Office of Insular Affairs contracted with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy to help develop a long-term strategic energy plan for the NMI and short-term energy action plans aimed at reducing this dependence on diesel. The strategic plan recommends reducing the cost of energy by providing subsidies for renewable projects.
