The Department of Health and Human Services recently released the LIHEAP funding nationally. Because Congress has yet to agree on appropriations for all of FY14 the funding released this week is only 90 percent of the expected annual total. The Northern Marianas will receive $50,000 initially and the balance sometime after January 15, when fiscal 2014 appropriations should be finalized. Energy costs are high in the Marianas and LIHEAP is an important way for Congress to assist those in need. The territories’ congressional representatives have petitioned the HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to increase LIHEAP grants for the island areas, which she has legal authority to do.
