The conference committee responsible for reconciling differences between the House and Senate versions of the "farm bill" had its first official meeting on Wednesday. The NMI SNAP program is part of the House bill, Section 4032 of H.R. 2642, drafted by Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas (R-Oklahoma). Lucas was elected to chair the 41-member conference committee. Conferees made opening statements, most expressed a commitment to work together to produce a final bill that can pass both the House and Senate. Although there has been opposition to including the NMI pilot program from some outside conservatives, I think that managing SNAP in the same way nationwide is very consistent with conservative goals of reform and increased accountability. Chairman Lucas and his Democratic counterpart on the House Agriculture Committee, Collin Peterson (D-Minnesota), have been incredibly patient and hardworking over the last three years.
