That was my message to the Saipan Chamber of Commerce. Getting the submerged lands around our islands returned to us in September, helping the hospital stay open this year with $27 million in new Obamacare money, driving us to the legislative five-yard line on a $33 million program to transition the NMI into the national food stamp program – these were the examples I used of opportunities I made in Congress to help our Commonwealth. Even with a Republican-led House I have been able to get NMI measures signed into law by working on both sides of the political aisle. I also reported to the Chamber on recent enactment P.L. 113-34, rescheduling minimum wage increases. Business and workers asked me to begin work on that change last year, when our economy looked much worse than it does today. I recognize that federal law is a one-size-fits-all solution, even though our economy has lots of variation. So, I encouraged individual Chamber members to decide for themselves and pay more as business improves. Our Commonwealth Legislature, too, should look at the $3.05 local minimum wage, because the federal minimum only applies to businesses making over $500,000. Raising wages – subject to economic realities – benefits our entire community. So, I will continue to support H.R. 1010, which raises the U.S. minimum to $10.10/hour. Under current law, minimum wage increases in the Northern Marianas stop when we reach $7.25/hour, but I want us to keep increasing beyond that and pay workers more. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
