As a result of this cut, retirees who also receive social security benefits may be eligible for a recalculation of these benefits. This is because these retirees may have been subject to the Windfall Elimination Provision when their social security benefit was first calculated. The WEP lowers the social security benefit of persons who are also receiving a pension from an employer, such as the Government of the Northern Mariana Islands, that did not withhold social security taxes. The Social Security Administration handles question of this nature on a case by case basis.
