More than 650 transformers have already been assessed, evacuated of oil, and shipped off island for recycling. Special shipping containers are needed, however, for the larger transformers, and EPA has determined that the required equipment would take several weeks to arrive on island. EPA additionally reports having identified 8 sites on Saipan where transformers containing PCBs may have spilled. Assessment of these sites was complicated by Tropical Storm Champi, which caused flooding in some of these areas, so additional sampling and investigation are now underway. Meanwhile, EPA is also working with the Public School System to coordinate electronic waste collection, which has become more feasible as power has been restored to the schools and assessments, inventories and other procedures required for disposal of public equipment can now be conducted. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
