Congresswoman Susan W. Brooks (R-IN5) voted in favor of H.R. 3457, the Justice for Victims of Iranian Terrorism Act of which she is a co-sponsor and strong supporter. This legislation, which passed the House with a vote of 251-173, prohibits the lifting of economic sanctions on the Islamic Republic of Iran until Iran pays court-ordered compensation to victims of its state-sponsored terrorism. This legislation is the latest in a series of actions taken by Brooks who continues to oppose any sanctions relief for Iran. Im proud to support this legislation, authored by fellow former U.S. Attorney, Representative Pat Meehan (R-PA7), Brooks said. I continue to have grave concerns about lifting sanctions on Iran, especially when it owes more than $43.5 billion in unpaid damages to its victims. If sanctions are lifted, Iran stands to gain almost $150 billion, but there are no provisions which allow these victims and their families to receive the damages awarded by American courts. H.R. 3457 prohibits the President from waiving, suspending or limiting any sanctions currently in place against the Islamic Republic of Iran, until the President has certified to Congress that Iran has paid each federal court judgment. In the past 15 years, more than 80 judgments have been handed down against Iran in civil suits, permitted under U.S. law against terrorist states by U.S. victims of state-sponsored terrorism. I will continue to work against this agreement using all available measures and to fight for states, like Indiana, to continue to enforce existing sanctions against Iran and to fight for American victims of Iranian state-sponsored terrorism.
