Brooks (R-IN5) released the following statement after voting in favor of House Joint Resolution 59, the Ryan-Murray Budget Deal: “Time and again, 5th District constituents have told me the political uncertainty coming from Washington makes planning for their own futures increasingly difficult. It’s hard to plan on expanding your business, buying a new home or heading off to college when our government can’t get its fiscal house in order. That’s why it’s so important for Congress to reach a budget deal that provides much needed stability for businesses and families trying to improve their standing in a tough economy. This bill cuts $23 billion from our deficit, protects our military members and does not raise taxes. It also ends the threat of another government shutdown. There is much more work to be done to put America on a path to fiscal solvency, but today’s vote is an important step in the right direction.” The deal finds common sense spending reforms to replace sequestration cuts while still reducing the deficit by an additional $23 billion. Specifically, it prevents an additional $22 billion in cuts to our national defense efforts. The deal is $78 billion below where government spending was when Republicans took back the majority in the House in 2010 and $191 billion below where President Obama anticipated discretionary spending to be in his original budget. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
