| http://teddeutch.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=359959 | PRESS ADVISORY: Reps. Frankel, Deutch, Murphy, Everglades Advocates to Announce Next Steps for Everglades Restoration | 2013-10-31 | 2013 | 2013-10 | Democrat | House | FL | Ted Deutch | D000610 | teddeutch.house.gov | legacy | On Friday morning, Congresswoman Lois Frankel and Congressmen Ted Deutch and Patrick Murphy along with other Everglades advocates Erik Eikenberg and John A. Marshall will announce next steps for Everglades Restoration and talk about the local impact. The press conference is being held at Clear Lake because the lake reservoir supplies water to West Palm Beach from the Everglades ecosystem. After the recent passage of the bipartisan Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA), Everglades Restoration can move forward. The WRRDA bill will allow four Everglades projects to break ground and paves the way for the Central Everglades Planning Project to progress, which marks a monumental step. South Florida’s congressional delegation members have been vocal advocates for Everglades Restoration. Frankel, who serves on the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee and its Water Resources and the Environment Subcommittee, helped ensure the WRRDA bill allowed Everglades Restoration to progress and worked with Florida delegation members to make sure Everglades issues were at the forefront. Murphy recently held a Congressional briefing on local waterways issues with over 100 community members to speak to the importance of moving forward expeditiously on Everglades restoration projects, which will benefit the health of these polluted waterways. Amid unprecedented budget cuts in Washington, Deutch has worked to protect funding for Everglades Restoration projects critical to supplying safe drinking water to the people of South Florida and essential to preserving the unique ecosystem of the Everglades. The Everglades is important to South Florida’s economy and critical to South Florida’s water supply. According to an Everglades Foundation study, for every dollar invested in Everglades restoration, $4 are generated in economic benefits. The Everglades is the primary source of drinking water for more than 7 million Americans, including providing water to South Floridians.
