http://teddeutch.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=399451 Deutch Statement on MSD Public Safety Commission Draft Report 2018-12-12 2018 2018-12 Democrat House FL Ted Deutch D000610 teddeutch.house.gov     legacy Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-22), representing the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School community, issued this statement on the draft report prepared by the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission:The state commission has worked hard to evaluate what went wrong in the years, months, and days leading to the tragedy on February 14. I value their recommendations and look forward to working with the Parkland families, school administrators, and law enforcement officials to ensure that there is accountability for failures and changes to ensure that this does not happen again. Importantly, the commission recommends much-needed improvements to school security and procedures and law enforcement protocol to prevent and respond to attacks. I hope they will be seriously considered by local and state officials, as well as my colleagues in Congress. However, statements from commission members supporting arming teachers are concerning. Teachers want to teach, not be armed for combat in their classrooms. Law enforcement cannot push their responsibilities to make our communities safer on to civilians that should be focused on educating their students. Finally, we cannot ignore the role that easy access to the most dangerous firearms played in the worst school shooting in our state's history. The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act made important changes to our gun laws, including raising the minimum age for buying a gun and creating a red-flag law for law enforcement. But there is more we must do to strengthen our gun laws to make it harder for potential killers to access firearms, especially assault riflesthe weapon of choice of mass shooters. I have two requests of the Florida legislature in light of this report. First, seriously consider the commission's recommendations and work to implement new standards that will promote school safety. Second, lawmakers in Tallahassee must turn away from lobbyists for gun corporations. We cannot allow those who profit off of easy gun sales to keep a seat at the table. We must all commit to studying how stronger gun laws can make Floridians safer from gun violence. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
