Watch Tiptons exchange with the witnesses HERE. The CFPB is collecting massive amounts of consumer data, including sensitive personal identifiers, on millions of Americans without their knowledge, and to make matters worse, CFPB does not have the infrastructure or capability to properly secure that data, Tipton said. This speaks to the larger problem that CFPB is an institution without accountability to Congress or any other entity that is run by a single director who presumes to have all of the answers. Title X of the Dodd-Frank Act authorizes the CFPB to collect data for its supervisory and monitoring efforts, although their needs can be addressed almost entirely with data already publicly available. However, the CFPB has collected much more than publicly available data, with one example being the National Mortgage Database (NMDB). The CFPB is compiling the type, term and sales price of the mortgage as well as the borrowers income and credit history for the NMDB. Disturbingly, the NMDB even specifies a borrowers gender, age, and ethnicity. A 2014 Government Accountability Office report warned that the CFPB had two key deficiencies, including the CFPBs lack of written procedures for a number of processes and a failure by the CFPB to implement a number of privacy control steps and information security practices. Unfortunately, after assurances that the CFPB would rectify these mistakes, a 2015 CFPB Office of Inspector General report found that the CFPBs data security program still has several notable weaknesses. The CFPB is once more overstepping its authority and in doing so, jeopardizing the security of Americans sensitive personal data, said Tipton. This committee is committed to providing oversight of this out of control entity in every way that we can, and will continue to fight to advance legislation to implement needed reforms at CFPB and make the entity accountable to the American people and their Representatives. Tipton is the co-sponsor of several pieces of legislation to reform CFPB, including the TABS Act (H.R. 1486) which would require that CFPB be funded through the regular Congressional appropriations process instead of through earnings transferred within the Federal Reserve Systemthereby making the entity more accountable to Congress. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
