They decided to ignore the scientific experts, and in true Washington-knows-best fashion, listen to the bureaucracy instead, jeopardizing locally-tailored species preservation efforts already successfully underway in Colorado. This is not a political issue, but an occasion where people from diverse backgrounds and all sides of the political spectrum have worked together to put into place local plans of action to preserve the species based on extensive scientific data—and they’re working. In addition to implementing a wide range of voluntary conservation efforts, these stakeholders have done everything the federal government has asked to ensure the recovery of this species. “I support the State of Colorado’s announced decision to challenge the listing in court, and am hopeful that it is successful for the sake of the health and prosperity of the grouse, and for the sake of the communities that will be severely impacted by this ill-advised federal overreach.” Tipton has been a vocal advocate in Congress for scientifically-supported locally-tailored species preservation efforts like those currently underway in Colorado. Such efforts have the flexibility to account for the specific ecological and geographic conditions of a region; ensuring more effective, targeted species preservation can take place. A broad federal ESA listing would disrupt these efforts in favor of a less-effective, one-size-fits all approach that would implement uniform restrictions and requirements over an expansive range regardless of the local topographic and ecological conditions. Tipton has co-sponsored legislation (The Sage Grouse Protection and Conservation Act) to prevent the Greater and Gunnison sage grouse from being listed under the Endangered Species Act for 10 years, and instead requires states to develop conservation management plans to meet the unique needs of the Sage grouse in each state.
