Toomey's Remarks At The 150th Anniversary Of The Gettysburg Address [press_release] 2013-11-20 2013 2013-11 Republican House PA Patrick Toomey T000461 toomey.senate.gov     legacy WASHINGTON, D.C. - At a ceremony at Gettysburg National Military Park, U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) delivered the below remarks on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address: "Thank you. Director Jarvis, Secretary Jewel, Justice Scalia, Governor Corbett, Dr. McPherson, fellow Members of Congress, and distinguished guests. "It's a humbling experience to try to find the words to commemorate adequately the greatest of American speeches given by the one indispensable American at the time of our most terrible national trial. "One hundred and fifty years ago today the Civil War was still raging. It would continue 507 more days. 375,000 more Americans would become casualties. The horror was staggering, the outcome still far from certain. Union Americans needed to understand why they should continue to sacrifice their sons for this cause. When his nation needed his words, his inspiration to renew its dedication to the cause for which it fought -- in the Gettysburg Address -- Abraham Lincoln rose to that challenge with words that matched the power of his deeds. "How blessed are we as a nation to have been given at our moment of greatest need a leader so deeply committed to the purpose and promise of this great republic, and possessing the wisdom, the courage, and the strength to guide us toward a more perfect union? "Thank you." 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
