http://toomey.senate.gov?p=news&id=1205 Toomey Working To Help Protect Israel, Strengthen Middle East Security [press_release] 2013-11-20 2013 2013-11 Republican House PA Patrick Toomey T000461 toomey.senate.gov     legacy WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) announced today his latest effort in support of Israel.  Sen. Toomey has introduced a two-part bill, expressing congressional support for Israel against potential threats posed by Iran and Syria. Sen. Toomey's bill calls upon the Secretary of Defense to identify defense cooperation and partnership opportunities that will help ensure Israel can adequately protect itself against an Iranian nuclear threat.  Additionally, Sen. Toomey's bill affirms support for Israel's right to respond should Syria follow through with plans to obtain an S-300 surface-to-air missile (SAM) system from Russia.  A Syrian-owned S-300 SAM system would pose a grave threat to Israeli and regional security.  "Assisting strong American allies like Israel in its efforts to protect itself from substantial threats is essential to Middle East security and our nation's interests," said Sen. Toomey.  "Israel is one of our strongest allies in the Middle East. With this in mind, I believe Congress and the Pentagon should work to bolster Israeli security while also urging countries like Iran and Syria to abandon their pursuit of advanced weapons technology."  Since taking office in 2011, Sen. Toomey has made support for Israel a priority.  Sen. Toomey has also worked in a bipartisan manner to ensure that President Obama stands with Israel.  He recently joined dozens of his Senate colleagues in requesting that President Obama act swiftly to halt Iran's quest to develop nuclear weapons. "As Americans we are grateful that Sen. Toomey clearly understands that what has driven the Iranians to negotiate is an understanding on their part that all options remain on the table. The sanctions will keep them at the table - any lessening of the sanctions will only embolden them.  The additional military support and cooperation that Sen. Toomey proposes will ensure American resolve to end the Iranian nuclear weapons initiative permanently," said Marc Felgoise - Pennsylvania constituent. "We welcome Sen. Toomey's leadership on this vital issue. It is imperative that Israel's qualitative military edge be maintained, and that the Jewish state has the resources to tackle any threats in the region, including and especially the existential threat posed by Iran's nuclear weapons program," said Pastor Liz DeFrain- Christians United for Israel. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
