Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, today released the following statement upon the House of Representatives advancing a veto override for S. 2040, the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism (JASTA) Act by a 348 to 77 vote. “As someone who experienced the horrors of 9/11 up close, it’s important to me that the families of the victims are allowed to pursue the justice they deserve. This legislation has enjoyed strong, bipartisan support in both the House and the Senate. It doesn’t make dramatic changes to existing law. It simply allows Americans to seek legal avenues against foreign governments that sponsor terrorist attacks on United States soil. I’m proud to stand up and do right by the victims of the heinous 9/11 attacks to vote in favor of overriding this veto.” In May of this year, the Senate passed JASTA by a voice vote. The bill then passed the House by a voice vote on September 9, 2016. Last week, the president vetoed the bill.
