Those are words that could be used to describe the current political climate. However, Tuesday night in Washington, a select group of Republicans and Democrats were rewarded for working together. Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI) said, "Together, we could not be beaten." He was talking about working across the aisle, with Colorado Democrat, Diana DeGette. Congresswoman DeGette said, "We have had some really important milestones in bipartisanship." The Javits Foundation honored the representatives for their work on the 21st Century Cures Act. The law, signed last year by President Obama, allocated nearly five billion dollars for medical research and battling the opioid epidemic. Upton said, "We have our issues, we know that we do, between our two sides. You got to get around that, and you've got to find an area where you can agree, not agree to disagree but agree." CLICK HERE TO WATCH The Foundation also gave Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) a lifetime achievement award for bipartisan leadership. Portman called the award a great honor, but says most people in politics are rewarded for standing with their respective parties, rather than working together. He says it's becoming more difficult to find common ground. Portman said, "I gave the media a hard time tonight, a little bit, in that the media tends to play down bipartisanship and play up partisanship and conflict." An example of Senator Portman's bipartisan work will play out this week, when a Senate committee votes on a bill aimed at allowing sex trafficking victims to sue websites, for allowing sex trafficking advertisements.
