Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, and Chairman of the Energy Subcommittee, today met with Enbridge Vice President Guy Jarvis to discuss the Line 5 pipeline, which runs under the Straits of Mackinac. The meeting focused on the two public letters Upton had previously sent the company. Upton again expressed alarm and deep concern regarding recent reports on gaps in the protective coating on several portions of the pipeline. He also reiterated that a spill would be catastrophic to the Great Lakes and completely unacceptable. Upton specifically requested an in-person review and briefing on Enbridge’s Integrity Management Plan, which is the company’s plan to identify, assess, and mitigate risks to the pipeline in order to reduce the likelihood of impacts on any possible incidents. Upton also stressed the importance of continued coordination between Enbridge, federal officials, and state officials in Michigan.
