Sincerely, Marc Veasey Member of Congress Honoring Our Veterans On Tuesday, November 10th, I honored seven local veterans with the 2015 Congressional Veteran Commendation (CVC) for their service at my Veterans Town Hall in Dallas. The 2015 recipients included Mr. David Babbs (Arlington), Mr. Alcee Chriss (Fort Worth), Mr. Trini Garza (Dallas), Ms. Stephanie Hanson (Dallas), Retired Aviation Warfare Specialist First Class Petty Officer Ronnie Mestas (Dallas), Mr. Robert Ramirez (Grand Prairie) and Mr. Charlie Alonzo Valdez (Fort Worth). Earlier that day, I had the privilege of presenting Mr. Dale Parker with medals he earned during his service as an Engineman Petty Officer First Class with the United States Navy from 1952-1955.I also presented Mr. Michael Killam, a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War, with a proclamation from President Obama commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. I am grateful for the service of these individuals and the other men and women of the 33rd Congressional District who have worn our nations uniform. Keeping Reliable Transportation Accessible for the DFWs Metroplexs Senior Community Earlier this month, I introduced an amendment to secure funding for Handitran and other paratransit services nationwide. The amendment passed as part of H.R. 22, a long-term transportation and infrastructure bill. The continued funding of paratransit providers like Handitran ensures that our elderly and disabled neighbors can remain independent by giving them access to employment, education, healthcare, shopping, and the other services they need. Addressing the Syrian Refugee Crisis I am committed to providing refuge to some of the world's most vulnerable people. To turn our backs on refugees would be to betray our nation's core values. The United States is a welcoming country with a diverse population and our resettlement program must continue to reflect this key trait of our nations history. I have supported a number of bills and sent letters to the Administration and agencies supporting refugees, including a letter to President Obama urging him to convene international negotiations to stop the Syrian Civil War, a letter to Secretary Kerry writing to express our deep concern for the hundreds of thousands of Sub-Saharan African refugees seeking refuge and asylum. I also co-sponsored H.R. 1568, the Protecting Religious Minorities Persecuted by ISIS Act of 2015, which directs the Secretary of State to establish or use existing refugee processing mechanisms in Iraq to allow individuals with a credible fear of persecution by ISIL for gender, religious, or ethnic membership to apply directly to the United States Refugee Admissions Program for priority 2 refugee admission to the United States. I voted in favor of the American SAFE Act to ensure that our countrys resettlement program can reflect evolving national security threats but I believe that we must also demonstrate the compassion that the men, women, and children fleeing the Middle East need during this time. 3rd Annual 33rd Congressional District Job Fair On November 20, 2015, hundreds of job seekers from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex joined me for my 3rd Annual 33rd Congressional District Job fair. Hosting my annual job fairis part of my ongoing effort to promote well-paying sustainable jobs right here in our community. Attendees met face-to-face with 80+ actively hiring companies and took advantage of FREE workshops to market their skills in todays job market. I would also like to personally thank Workforce Solutions of Tarrant County and the City of Forest Hill for their cooperation! Congressional STEM App Competition Are you a student interested in STEM and want to bring your innovative idea to life? I am proud to host the second annual House Student App Contest for Congressional District 33. Students are invited to compete by creating and exhibiting their software application, or app, for mobile, tablet, or computer devices on a platform of their choice. To be eligible to participate in the contest, you must be at least 13 years old and attend high school in my district. My office is currently accepting submissions until January 8, 2016. Grant Opportunities for 33rd District Organizations Help families & children sign up for CHIP This month the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced $32 million in available funds to support efforts to reach out to families with children eligible for Medicaid and the Childrens Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and help get them covered. The Connecting Kids to Coverage Outreach and Enrollment Grant funds are provided under the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) of 2015.State and local governments, Indian tribes and tribal organizations, certain health care provider organizations, nonprofit organizations including community and faith-based groups, and schools and school districts are eligible to apply. Applicants are asked to target populations likely to be eligible for Medicaid and CHIP, but generally less likely to be enrolled; examples of target populations include teens, Latino children and children in rural areas.
