The service provides an opportunity for citizens to safely and securely dispose of their expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs at an authorized disposal site in their community.“Prescription drug abuse is shattering lives and tearing families apart and we must work together to combat this grow epidemic in our communities,” said Congressman Walberg. “Proper disposal of old and unwanted prescription drugs is one important way we can help keep our children, families, and neighborhoods safe.”National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is free and anonymous—no questions asked. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. The usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards. In April, Americans turned in 447 tons—over 893,000 pounds—of prescription drugs at nearly 5,400 sites across the country.
