The hearing will be chaired by Representative Woodall and is focused on examining the impact the Affordable Care Act is having on families, small businesses and healthcare providers throughout the region, specifically in rural areas. With over half of rural counties served by federal exchanges only offering one or two options for customers, and prices for these plans often being double the cost of urban areas, many throughout the Seventh District are feeling the negative effects of the law. “I have never supported the government takeover of healthcare imagined by the Affordable Care Act,” said Woodall. “Large federal initiatives are often marked by misleading reports and gross mismanagement, and unfortunately ObamaCare is no exception. Most important to me, though, is how this law is affecting families at home in Georgia. Too often, Washington simply talks. This hearing is focused on listening, and as a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, I am pleased Chairman Issa shares my interest in hearing what the residents of Georgia have to say. I hope that some families have been helped by ObamaCare. I am certain that millions have been hurt. I hope that both Congress and the President will listen to what the participants in this hearing have to say, and that we will be able to work together to quickly repeal and replace those areas of concern.” ObamaCare has been at the forefront of the national conversation, and Georgia has been no different. The healthcare law has taken center stage of late from town hall meetings to committee meetings, and the OGR hearing chaired by Woodall is another step in the ongoing efforts of Congress to get out of Washington, D.C., and into the areas where the effects of the healthcare overhaul are being felt. “Millions of Americans are losing their insurance as a result of the President’s healthcare law and even more are seeing their premiums increase beyond what they can afford,” Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, Darrell Issa (R-CA) said. “This hearing will give the Committee an opportunity to hear first hand from those in rural areas who are being hit the hardest by shrinking choices and skyrocketing costs, and the impact that is having on their families.” Woodall continued, “I regret that this hearing is necessary at all, but am grateful Chairman Issa and my Committee colleagues are willing to come and hear from Georgia constituents.” Woodall added that Gwinnett County gets to play a very unique role in the healthcare debate with this hearing as not only is the hometown Congressman chairing the hearing, but Gwinnett County’s own small business owner, Raymer Sale, President of E2E Benefits Services, Inc., will also be testifying before the committee. “In D.C. I always brag about the kind of expertise we have in the Seventh District, and wanted to be sure we take full advantage of that wealth of knowledge for this hearing. I am very happy to see that the Committee agreed with me when I suggested one of our Seventh District leaders, Raymer Sale, as a witness for the hearing. He is an expert in employee benefits and human resources administration, and his testimony will provide extremely valuable insight for my colleagues in Washington.” As the President touts the re-launch of his healthcare exchange website, House Republicans seem focused on dismantling the law completely. Critics of Republicans say these hearings are witch hunts, staged by Republicans to undermine the success of the healthcare overhaul. Woodall says any and all of those assertions are mean spirited and wrong. He insists that the impetus for these hearings is nothing more than simple constituent service and the most fundamental constitutional responsibility of Congress. Woodall concluded, “The stories of family after family losing healthcare coverage because of this terribly misguided legislation are all too real. Washington’s political agenda should never be at the expense of those we are there to serve.
